I have to confess that I’ve neither seen the movie, nor read the book, War Horse, but, with Remembrance Sunday imminent, I was struck by this image that I came across last night.
It is a photograph of World War One soldiers paying a tribute to the 8 million horses, mules and donkeys lost in that war.
I wear an extra layer of sadness when it comes to the animals that were used in such conflicts, for the men who signed up to fight were at least aware of the circumstances and implications of their actions, where for the horses and donkeys, mules and dogs, they must have been terrified to find themselves in such hellish conditions, paying a price for their service to man.
I quite agree with you, the animals had no choice … and now they are training dolphins to put bombs on boats. How perverse can it get …

It is very sad, Linda. And they have no say in the matter.

I’ve seen that photo before, and I’m amazed by it. The movie, I watched it twice, made me cry both times ..it is a great movie, you should watch it.

Oh my goodness what a poignant image. Never seen this before but a significant reminder of what else was lost as well as human life.

Yes, man’s theatres of war caused suffering to all life, especially his own.

I saw an incredible theater production of The War Horse a few years ago. It’s a great story.
We demand so much of animals and they have no choice in the matter. I hope there is justice for them somewhere. That picture shows me that at least the soldiers had some consciousness about it, which means a lot to me.

I really should catch it, either the show or at least the book.
